Exterior Contractor Serving Everson, Washington

Everson sits in the Nooksack River valley in Whatcom County, close enough to Lynden that our crews are often working in both towns in the same week. It's farm country and river-bottom country, which means homes here deal with a specific mix of conditions: damp air that settles in low and doesn't burn off quickly, driving rain that comes sideways off winter storms, and a marine-influenced climate that carries salt-tinged moisture inland from the Strait and Puget Sound on the wrong wind. None of that is dramatic on any given day. It's the accumulation over years that shows up as soft trim, moss-covered roofs, and siding that's failed from the back side before anyone noticed a problem from the front.

What the Climate Does to Exterior Surfaces Here

Whatcom County doesn't get extreme weather so much as it gets persistent weather. Long stretches of overcast, drizzly days keep exterior surfaces damp for longer than homeowners in drier climates ever have to think about. A few things that show up consistently on Everson-area homes:

  • Moss and algae growth on roofing, north-facing siding, and anywhere shade keeps a surface from drying out between rains.
  • Paint and caulk failure on wood-based siding and trim, driven by repeated wet/dry cycling rather than any single storm.
  • Rot at vulnerable points — window sills, trim joints, deck ledger boards, and anywhere water is allowed to sit or wick into end grain.
  • Gutter and roof stress from the sheer volume of rain the region sees over a wet season, especially where debris from surrounding trees and farmland collects.

Driving rain is the detail people underestimate most. It's not just water landing on a roof — it's water being pushed sideways into siding laps, window flanges, and any gap in the building envelope. An exterior that isn't detailed correctly for that kind of exposure will leak somewhere eventually, and in a valley that stays damp as long as this one does, a slow leak can do real damage before it's visible.

Siding: Why We Only Install James Hardie

Lynden Exterior Co. installs James Hardie fiber cement siding exclusively. We don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, cedar, primed spruce, or other fiber cement brands, and that's a deliberate standard, not an oversight. In a climate like Whatcom County's, siding spends most of the year damp, shaded, or both. Wood-based products — cedar, primed spruce, engineered wood siding like LP SmartSide — depend on paint film and factory sealing to keep moisture out of the substrate. Once that seal is compromised at a cut edge, a fastener hole, or a joint that wasn't caulked correctly, moisture gets into the wood fiber and the clock starts on rot, even if the surface still looks fine.

Vinyl siding avoids the rot problem but brings its own trade-offs: it expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings, it can crack or become brittle over time, and it's not resistant to fire the way a fiber cement product is. James Hardie's fiber cement is non-combustible, holds its factory-applied ColorPlus finish far longer than field-applied paint, and is engineered in HZ5 and HZ10 formulations specifically for the kind of wet, moderate marine climate we have here. It doesn't rot, it doesn't need repainting on the same cycle as wood, and it carries a strong transferable warranty when installed to manufacturer spec. That last part matters — Hardie siding installed incorrectly can still fail, so correct installation (proper clearances, flashing, and fastening) is as important as the material itself.

Roofing, Windows, and Decks Built for This Valley

Siding is only part of the exterior envelope. We also handle roofing, windows, and decks, and all three get sized up against the same climate realities as the siding does.

ComponentLocal ConcernOur Approach
RoofingMoss, prolonged moisture exposure, wind-driven rainProper underlayment and flashing detail, materials suited to sustained damp conditions
WindowsWater intrusion at flanges and sills, condensation in damp monthsCorrect flashing integration with the siding system, quality units matched to the region
DecksLedger board rot, standing water on horizontal surfacesDurable materials and detailing that shed water instead of trapping it

Windows and roofing in particular only perform as well as their integration with the siding around them. A well-built window means little if the flashing behind the siding wasn't lapped correctly, and that's a detail that's easy to get wrong and hard to inspect once the siding is closed up. It's one more reason we treat the whole exterior as one connected system rather than a set of separate trades.

A Local Crew That Knows Everson

We're based in Lynden, and Everson is close enough that it's part of our regular service area, not an occasional trip. That matters for exterior work more than people expect — knowing how this valley behaves through a wet winter, which sides of a house take the worst of the driving rain, and where moss tends to build up fastest lets us make better calls on materials and detailing than a crew working from a generic spec sheet. We also stand behind the work locally, which is worth something when a warranty claim or a follow-up question comes up years down the road.

If you're planning siding, roofing, window, or deck work on a home in Everson, we're happy to take a look and talk through what your house actually needs. Reach out for a free, no-pressure estimate — there's a form below to get started.
