One Product, One Standard

We get asked this a lot: why does a contractor limit itself to one siding manufacturer? Most exterior companies in Whatcom County will install whatever a homeowner picks — vinyl, LP SmartSide, cedar, fiber cement from various makers. We made a different call years ago. We install James Hardie fiber cement siding, exclusively, on every home we side. This page explains the reasoning, not the sales pitch.

What Lynden's Climate Actually Does to Siding

Lynden sits inland from Bellingham Bay but still gets plenty of marine influence — salt-tinged air, long stretches of driving rain off the Pacific, and a wet season that can stretch from October well into April. Add in shaded north-facing walls that stay damp for days after a storm, and you've got a climate that's genuinely hard on exterior building products. Moss and algae growth is a constant maintenance issue here, not an occasional one. Any siding material we put on a home has to survive repeated soak-and-dry cycles, resist moisture intrusion at every seam and fastener, and hold its finish without constant homeowner upkeep. Not every product on the market does that well, and we've seen the difference over enough installations to have a strong opinion about it.

Why We Standardized on Hardie

Fiber Cement That's Actually Engineered for This Climate

James Hardie makes region-specific product formulations, and their HZ5 line is engineered for climates like ours — places with significant moisture exposure and temperature swings. That's not a marketing label; it affects the cement formulation itself, aimed at resisting moisture-related damage better than a one-size-fits-all product.

It Doesn't Burn

Fiber cement is non-combustible. That matters more each year as wildfire smoke and dry summer stretches become a bigger part of the Pacific Northwest's annual pattern, even here in the northwest corner of the state. It's not the main reason we chose Hardie, but it's a real, permanent advantage over wood-based and foam-core products.

ColorPlus Finish

Hardie's factory-applied ColorPlus finish is baked on under controlled conditions, with a finish warranty that's meaningfully longer than what field-applied paint typically delivers. In a climate where UV exposure is moderate but moisture exposure is constant, a factory finish that resists fading, chipping, and moisture-related peeling saves homeowners from repainting a rain-soaked wall every several years — one of the more tedious and expensive maintenance jobs a homeowner in Whatcom County can face.

A Warranty Structure We Can Stand Behind

Hardie backs its siding with a strong, transferable limited warranty. That transferability matters to buyers and sellers alike in a real estate market where exterior condition affects home value directly. We'd rather install one product we can vouch for at year fifteen than juggle warranty terms across five different manufacturers.

What We're Not Saying

We're not going to tell you other siding products are junk — that's not honest and it's not our style. Vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild climates. Cedar has real curb appeal and a long tradition in this region. LP SmartSide and other fiber-cement competitors have loyal installers and reasonable track records elsewhere. What we will say is that after years of installing exteriors in Lynden and across Whatcom County, we found ourselves consistently recommending one product over the others for durability, moisture performance, and long-term appearance — so we stopped installing the rest. It's a business decision built on installation experience, not a knock on every other manufacturer's engineering team.

What Correct Installation Actually Involves

Hardie siding is only as good as the install. The product's own warranty depends on installation to their published specifications — proper clearance from grade and roof lines, correct fastener placement and spacing, weather-resistive barrier and flashing detail behind every seam, and factory-mitered or properly caulked joints. We've seen Hardie installed poorly by crews unfamiliar with its specific requirements, and that's when problems show up — not from the product itself, but from cut corners in the install. Since we only install one product, our crews aren't switching between five different systems and forgetting the details that matter for each one.

Product Lines We Work With

  • HardiePlank lap siding — the most common choice, available in several exposure widths and textures
  • HardieShingle — for homes wanting a shingle or shake look without the moisture upkeep of real wood
  • HardiePanel — vertical panel applications, often paired with board-and-batten detailing
  • HardieTrim — matching trim boards for a consistent, factory-finished look around windows, corners, and fascia

Our Bottom Line

We're an exteriors contractor in Lynden, and our name goes on every job we finish. Standardizing on one manufacturer means we know the product cold, we install it the same correct way every time, and we can stand behind the result for the long haul — through however many more wet Whatcom County winters that home sees. If you're planning a siding project and want a straight answer about what will actually hold up here, we're glad to walk your home with you.
